UAE trading company VAT & tax support
Import/export, wholesale and distribution businesses deal with customs declarations, inventory valuation, designated-zone movements and related-party transactions. Here is how we structure books and returns for goods businesses.

Not every free zone is a VAT designated zone
"Designated Zone" is a specific VAT concept covering named free zones that meet FTA criteria for fenced area, customs control and audit arrangements. Not every free zone qualifies. Goods movements between designated zones have special rules; service supplies are treated as made in the UAE regardless.
What matters in trading-company compliance
Imports and customs evidence
Customs declaration, commercial invoice and bill of entry are the base evidence for import VAT. Reconcile each import to the purchase ledger and VAT201 import line.
Inventory reconciliation
Physical count vs system quantity vs ledger value. Shrinkage, obsolescence and cost method (FIFO/weighted average) affect CT and should be documented.
Designated-zone movements
Qualifying goods movements between designated zones can be outside the scope of UAE VAT, subject to conditions. Keep movement documentation and designated-zone evidence.
CT and related parties
Intercompany sales, group inventory transfers and holding-company management fees need arm's-length pricing and documentation. Related-party transfer-pricing rules apply.
Free-zone / QFZP flag
Free-zone trading companies claiming 0% QFZP status must meet qualifying-income tests and de minimis. A written assessment before filing is sensible.
Packaged beverage excise
If your SKUs include sweetened or carbonated drinks or tobacco products, excise registration and monthly returns apply. See the excise glossary.
Frequently asked questions
Is every free zone a designated zone for VAT?
No. The FTA publishes a list of designated zones. A free-zone licence does not automatically give designated-zone VAT treatment for goods. Confirm before relying on the treatment.
How is import VAT reconciled?
Customs declaration value + duty = import VAT base. Reconcile against the auto-populated figure in VAT201, and keep the purchase invoice, customs declaration and bill of entry linked in your evidence folder.
Do goods movements need evidence?
Yes. Goods moving between designated zones, out of a designated zone to mainland, or on export all have different VAT treatments and different evidence requirements. Keep the movement documentation per shipment.
When do related-party rules apply?
Any transaction with a related party or connected person is within scope of the arm's-length principle. Master/local file documentation applies at taxpayer revenue of at least AED 200 million or MNE revenue of at least AED 3.15 billion. Below those thresholds, you still need to defend the pricing.
