Zoho or QuickBooks: do you need extra tax support?

Zoho Books and QuickBooks already handle UAE VAT inside your ledger. So when does another subscription actually earn its keep? This guide walks through what each platform already does, what it does not, and when a specialist review or filing service becomes worth the fee.

What your accounting ledger already does

Zoho Books UAE

  • • UAE VAT built in with FTA-aligned tax codes.
  • • Direct VAT201 submission to EmaraTax from Zoho (Digital Tax Integrator).
  • • Voluntary disclosures and amendments supported through the integrator.
  • • UAE Corporate Tax reports and compliance features on the UAE edition.
  • • Paid e-invoicing add-on for PINT-AE output.

QuickBooks UAE

  • • UAE VAT tracking with configurable tax codes.
  • • VAT return reports and preparation inside the ledger.
  • • Direct EmaraTax submission capability varies by edition — confirm on the Intuit UAE page.
  • • Multi-currency and multi-entity features for growing businesses.

Published platform features change. Always verify current capability on the vendor's live UAE pages before buying.

What a ledger alone does not solve

Cleanup of historical data

Inconsistent tax codes in prior periods, duplicate invoices, missing purchase documents and manual journal adjustments require someone to sit with the data. Software does not know what you intended.

Unusual transactions

Designated-zone goods movements, reverse-charge on specific imports, bad-debt relief, intercompany recharges and non-standard discounts need case-by-case judgement. Many are not flagged automatically.

Corporate Tax adjustments

Accounting profit is not taxable income. Non-deductible expenses, interest-limitation checks, exempt income and SBR/QFZP positions require someone who understands both the ledger and the Corporate Tax law.

Related-party transactions

Owner salaries, group recharges and intercompany loans need an arm's-length view, not just correct coding. Below the documentation thresholds, you still need to defend the pricing.

Audit and FTA queries

When the FTA asks a question, the response is written by a human, with evidence. Software gives you the records; it does not draft the reply.

A decision tree

  • Simple VAT only, confident bookkeeper in the business: Stay with the accounting software. Do not pay for another tax tool unless you hit real problems.
  • Growing business, complex transactions, no in-house tax lead: Keep the accounting software for books, add a VAT filing service on top. TaxSey's AED 500/return scope covers preparation and reviewer sign-off of a clean ledger.
  • About to file a Corporate Tax return, no CT experience in the team: Keep books in the accounting software, engage a CT return preparation service (from AED 3,500) for the annual return. Software alone is a false economy for CT in year one.
  • Free-zone entity considering 0%: Software does not determine QFZP status. Get a written assessment before filing.
  • About to onboard to UAE e-invoicing: You need an accredited service provider on the MoF register. Accounting software may or may not include this; check.
