UAE VAT filing: service vs software vs DIY

You can file UAE VAT directly on EmaraTax yourself (DIY), use software to prepare the return (software), or engage a professional to prepare and review it (service). Here is a plain comparison of who does what, what it costs and where each option breaks down.

Indicative costs

DIY on EmaraTax

AED 0 in fees. Your own time instead.

Best fit: micro-business with simple transactions, owner-operator with accounting background, nil returns.

Software

From ~AED 60–500/month depending on plan and provider.

Best fit: businesses that want faster preparation, fewer reconciliation errors and a record of working papers, but have the internal capacity to review and submit.

Managed service

AED 500/return (standard), AED 4,500/year (TaxSey annual VAT package) or equivalent at other providers.

Best fit: businesses that want a named preparer and reviewer, or do not want to retain VAT expertise in-house.

Where each option breaks down

DIY risks

Returns filed without proper reconciliation often under- or over-state input VAT. Imports and reverse-charge transactions are the most common source of error. Penalties for a repeat late or incorrect return add up quickly.

Software risks

Software is only as accurate as the data entered. Without a human review of exceptions, auto-posted invoices with incorrect tax codes propagate into the return. Software alone does not pick up business-model changes (new product lines, new regions) without someone updating the setup.

Service risks

You remain legally responsible for the return filed in your name. A service is only as good as the scope: unclear deliverables, missing document handoff and unnamed reviewers are warning signs. Always ask for a scope letter before work starts.

You can mix them

The most common pattern we see with growing businesses:

  • • Books: accounting software (Zoho, QuickBooks, Xero) maintained in-house or by a bookkeeper.
  • • VAT return: prepared in a tax-focused layer (TaxSey) or in the accounting software itself, with a specialist reviewer signing off.
  • • Submission: on EmaraTax by the preparer after approval.
  • • CT and QFZP: specialist service per annum, not a monthly subscription.
